Raf's Reef Brief:

Why Visit Indonesian Corals?

Indonesia.jpg

Indonesia needs no introduction for coral enthusiasts— but I’ll give one anyway. Powered by the intense Indonesian Throughflow (the largest movement of water on the planet), Indonesia is the beating heart of the Coral Triangle; a scientific boundary demarking the world’s highest zone of coral biodiversity. As a result, the reefs in Indonesia are more diverse, dense, and alive than almost any country on Earth. The diversity continues above the water too, with hundreds of cultures, biomes, and cities to explore. And considering Indonesia’s massive size, you could spend a lifetime diving Indonesian reefs— and only see a fraction of what the country’s corals have to offer.

I could go on-and-on about the famous Indonesian destinations and their reefs; you’ve surely heard of Raja Ampat, Komodo, and Bali just to name a few. But Indonesian corals are severely under threat— unethical tourism, destructive fishing practices, and an exponentially growing the mining industry are taking their toll. It’s critical we see, share, and save these reefs before it’s too late!
