Raf's Reef Brief:
Why Visit Timor-Leste's Corals?

Timor-Leste is a small, rarely visited country at the bottom of the Coral Triangle, a scientific boundary demarking the world’s highest zone of coral biodiversity. The Wetar Strait to its north and Timor Passage to its south are connected to the Indonesian Throughflow (the largest movement of water on the plants), bringing an influx of cold nutrient rich water and coral larvae to the country. Additionally, the country’s recent struggle for independence prior to 2002 has kept it largely out of the ‘influencers’ eye with only ~60,000 tourists per year. As a result, in my opinion, Timor-Leste has some of the most underrated and undervisited corals in the entire world!
While much smaller than its neighbors, and significantly less famous, Timor-Leste’s diverse and dense hard coral reefs, especially in the Wetar Strait, warrant a visit. Not to mention the unique cultural identity (a mix of Papuan, Austronesian, & Portugese influences) that makes this place like no where else. Let’s see, share, and save these reefs before Timor-Leste becomes a tourist hotspot!
