Raf's Reef Brief:

Why Visit the Philippine's Corals?

Philippines.jpg

Known more for its luscious island landscapes than its corals, the Philippines is  the second largest country in the Coral Triangle; a scientific boundary demarking the world’s highest zone of coral biodiversity. Unsurprisingly then, the Philippines contains some of the most famous, dense, and diverse hard coral colonies in the entire world. But the Philippines is just as rich in coral reefs as it is in culture, with hundreds of ethnic groups and a population internationally famous for their friendliness and energy.

Thanks to widely spoken english and shocking affordability, the Philippines is one of the easiest countries to travel in the Coral Triangle. Afterall, it was the first country I visited on my Coral Triangle expedition for a reason. Unfortunately, Philippine reefs are constantly devastated by powerful Typhoons and destructive fishing practices— and without the Indonesian Throughflow, the corals here are much slower to recover than the country’s southern neighbors. But pristine reefs still exist in the Philippines, so let’s see, share, and save the corals that are left!
